M/S Ternen, from 1896, is highly popular for summer sightseeing cruises and more intimate social outings, offering a cozy and nostalgic atmosphere.
Ternen was purchased by Hjejleselskabet to meet the increasing demand for sailing on the Gudenå River.
Even though the old lady has been sailing with many thousands of happy guests every year since, she remains incredibly well-maintained. Time has simply embraced the boat, giving it a soul that contributes to creating authentic experiences on board.
Since 1896
1896
Ternen was built in Kristianstad, Sweden, and sailed to Randers, where it was registered. From there, the journey continued towards Silkeborg. Like Hjejlen, Ternen faced challenges on its maiden voyage, including in Randers, where 180 people had to board before the ship could pass under a railway bridge.
In its early years, Ternen sailed on the route between Silkeborg and Himmelbjerget, but later the boat found its home base in Ry.
1916
Ternen returned home to Silkeborg.
1923
After a quarter century of smoke and steam, the boiler was wearing out, and it was decided to rebuild Ternen into a motorboat. A 2-cylinder Kelvin petroleum engine with 36 horsepower was installed.
1940
From the beginning of the occupation, a prohibition was issued against using gasoline for tourist sailing, so Ternen was laid up during the years 1940-1945.
1984
In 1984, tables were installed in the salon of Ternen, allowing for dining arrangements on board. This made Ternen more versatile than before.

When you rent Ternen, you get a wonderful crew to sail the boat. You set the course, but there are always plenty of ideas and good advice available both at the Hjejleselskabet office and in the boat’s wheelhouse.
Perhaps the boat will take a round trip without stops while you enjoy refreshments on board. Maybe you’ll dock at one of the small landing stages along the lakes so everyone can disembark for a brisk walk. Or perhaps we can together create a different program based on your wishes and our experience. There are many possibilities when you set sail with a Hjejle boat from the dock.
With us, you decide whether you want to arrange your next event yourself or draw on our many years of experience. Contact us for further information at +45 86 82 07 66 or via mail@hjejlen.com.
Great events last longer than just a single day or evening. They live on in memories and conversations long after. By choosing to host your event on one of the Hjejle boats, you’ve already laid the solid foundation that ensures the event will be a resounding success.
The Hjejle Fleet consists of 9 unique historical boats, which each year provide experiences for more than 135,000 guests on the lakes.
